    Peter Charlie was born in 1957 in Capliano, North Vancouver, Squamish, Coast Salish Nation


    The Talking Stick was a traditional device used by most Northwest nations to control meetings between groups of high- ranking individuals and often to assist over language barriers. The person holding the stick had the opportunity to speak as long as necessary without interruption before surrendering the stick to the next individual who was given equal time to speak freely. The Talking Stick also was used to extract an opinion from someone who may be trying to respectfully remain neutral. The stick was often carved with the crests of the host chief –it this example, possibly Eagle, Raven, Female Figure and Bear
