Frequently, it represents transformation and metamorphosis, mirroring the butterfly's journey from a caterpillar into a magnificent winged creature. One traditional narrative recounts how the butterfly, initially a piece of fluttering bark, was animated by the mischievous entity Nanabozho (Nanabush), thereby signaling the capriciousness and spontaneity of creation. Additionally, butterflies symbolize joy, light-heartedness, and the advent of summer. They're also considered manifestations of the spirits of those who have passed on, with a butterfly's sighting interpreted as a spiritual visitation.
