Moreover, various parts of the moose – its hide, fur, antlers, and more – are employed in the fabrication of drums, artistic creations, and an assortment of tools. Unsurprisingly, then, the moose is a frequent subject of the Anishinaabe painters of this time. In this work by Goyce Kakegamic, the moose – while undeniably abstract – is so rendered with such earnestness that it seems to have life from within the page. Similarly, the stately creature is coloured with a sonorous palette that it seems to have an inner luminescence.Provenance
