A vision of the landscape as untouched and unspoiled, there is a sensation of infinite space stretching out behind the two petite views. The gentle greens against some sharp white and blues still have the hints of hand drawn texture, thanks to the lithographic process, but are intentional and only broken up by the small frame size. There is a gentle sense of guided direction, and the pair of views could be partnered snapshots of the tundra, or postcards of an idealized space.
During the press run for the McMichael Gallery's 2019 exhibition Itee Pootoogook: Hymns to the Silence, the exhibition's curator Nancy Campbell spoke to Itee's incredible vision and skill as a visual artist:
[Itee] Pootoogook’s work features a minimum of incident yet captures the depth of seemingly mundane moments of everyday life... In addition to his gift for making architectural drawings, Pootoogook was an imaginative landscape artist, with many of his works emphasizing the vast, open horizon that separates the land from the sky, often in a boldly minimalist compositional style.
