While best known for her fanciful bird compositions, Pitaloosie had a wonderfully varied repertoire of subjects over the course of her decades long career. Whereas most of her early images were produced as stonecuts, much of her latter work was produced using lithography. The lithographic process lends itself to greater use of tone and, certainly in this case, line. Here Pitaloosie offers us an image of an emaciated and rather dishevelled dog, or perhaps a wolf, who has apparently been separated from the pack. Despite the rather mangy appearance of the animal’s fur, the face is rather charming and almost seems to be smiling. Perhaps salvation is at hand!
