Diminutive works achieve monumentality and monumental works appear modest in scale. On the plus side, works which one might gloss over due to their “inconsequential” dimensions get the chance to be taken more seriously. Such is the case with this striking pair of figures by Barnabus. They are as complete and powerful as monumental works by the artist yet small enough to be carried as a talisman. It is also interesting to note the rather atypical choice of materials for an artist best known for his work in stone. Delightful!
Provenance
Collection of Mr. Jack Butler, acquired directly from the artist.
Jack and Sheila Butler were arts advisors in Baker Lake in the crucial years of artistic flowering in the community from 1969 to 1976.
