Beaver is a crest of the Laxsgiik in Tsimshian culture and one of the four primary crests of the Haisla people. The pole is unpainted and likely dates to the 1970s, based on the Department of Indian and Northern Development authenticity sticker affixed to the back. The carving style shows a strong affinity to other Haisla makers such as Sam Robinson (b. 1934) and Henry Robertson (1934-2016) and has a very pleasing depth to the carved forms, especially around the arms, legs, and tail. There is a note attached on the bottom of the base that identifies the maker as Clyde Robinson and that the pole was purchased from the “Beaver Post.” Signed with engraved initials “CR” on verso.
