Pauta is of course most famous for his sculptures, and specifically for his fabulous depictions of dancing bears. Though not as prolific, Pauta was a skilled draughtsman as well, and some twenty images by him were translated into prints over the years. (He was married to the well-known graphic artist Pitaloosie, but we don’t know if this encouraged him to draw or discouraged him from drawing more.) Birds were among Pauta’s favourite subjects in drawing, and as Dream of Owl clearly shows, he depicted them with a delightful sense of whimsy and vitality, very much in keeping with the Cape Dorset style.
