Images of sea spirits and sea goddess-like beings began to occasionally appear in Kenojuak’s drawings and prints almost from the very beginning. By the 1970s this imagery began to appear with some frequency. This exquisitely rendered Taleelayu presents the “sea maid” as a proud and fashionably dressed young woman. Instead of displaying braided hair, Taleelayu’s coiffure seems borrowed from The Enchanted Owl! Two birds, along with foliage and fronds of seaweed, complete the composition. One could be excused for imagining that the work could be interpreted as a self-portrait
