Remarkably, George Arluk began carving at the age of nine when his family was living in Rankin Inlet. He admired the works of older artists such as Tiktak and tried to emulate them. He continued to do this after his move to Arviat where he absorbed the influences of John Pangnark and Lucy Tasseor. However, Arluk managed to develop a strongly personal style by the early 1970s. Arluk’s mature works are characterized by their dynamic sense of movement in which abstracted forms weave in and out in dance-like rhythms. Thematically, Family Composition is not so different from a sculpture by Tasseor, but stylistically it is pure Arluk.
