Itulu began both carving and engraving ivory as early as the late 1940s. For many years Kimmirut was considered to be the source of the finest ivory artworks on Baffin Island, and Itulu was its leading practitioner. He often worked alongside his cousin the great Cape Dorset artist Sheokjuk Oqutaq, who periodically lived and carved in Kimmirut. Although this superb tableau by Itulu includes some lovely engraved images, what makes it truly remarkable is the charm, delicacy, and realism of the carving.
