Whale bone masks made by Inupiaq carvers have been a popular staple in the Alaska Native art market since at least the 1950s. Many of these masks are made in or around Point Hope, Alaska, and are smaller bone versions of customary dance masks that would have been made in wood. This piece depicts a smiling human and is carved from the denser part of the whalebone.
