This intriguing pair of Tlingit wooden objects, each topped with a bear finial, reflect a style of Tlingit carving dating back to the 1880s or 1890s. It’s a minor miracle that they have remained together all these years. The carvings showcase a playful form that could suggest a utilitarian past—possibly as handles of spoons, now broken and worn down by time and touch. The visible wear on the remnants of the handles indicates extensive use, perhaps repurposed as toys or hand-held stakes. The lack of precise historical context for these items leaves their original purpose a mystery but their transformation and the resulting patina add to their story, suggesting a long life beyond their initial utility.

First Arts extends our gratitude to Steven C. Brown for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
