Certainly unlike the oldest generation Cape Dorset graphic artists such as Parr, Kiakshuk, Tudlik, and Pitseolak, but even unlike peers of his own generation such as Kenojuak and Napatchie, Kananginak strove for naturalism almost from the very beginning. As Loon in Flight shows, Kananginak was more than simply a wildlife artist. He was a genius at depicting the realistic details of birds and other animals, but he also captured the movement and the spirit of his subjects. Most think of loons as swimming and diving birds, but here the artist captures the loon in seemingly joyous flight.
