While several female Cape Dorset artists made carvings over the years, few took it up sculpture as their primary form of expression; Omalluq and her colleague and almost exact contemporary Oviloo Tunnillie (1949-2014) were important exceptions. Omalluq focused on images of women in domestic situations: at work and with their families. Tooth Pull is a beautifully carved and charming depiction of everyday Inuit life before the era of southern-style dentistry. It’s an unusual subject in Inuit art but not unknown; in fact, the famous Kitikmeot artists Karoo Ashevak and Nick Sikkuark carved similar works, albeit in in a radically different style.
