The son of noted artists Qavaroak and Tayaraq Tunnillie, Ashevak began carving after he moved his family from Kinngait to an outpost camp, where he lived for about fifteen years. Like his parents, Ashevak became widely recognized for his skillful, and distinctly his own, depictions of Arctic wildlife, and in particular, polar bears. Their sloped shoulders, tapered faces and turned-in paws come from Tunnillie’s intimate knowledge and love for the polar bears. This heavy set bear, at a glance, is what one would expect from Ashevak; there is a grace to the lumbering walk, the head is bowed down, close to the ground, sniffing out their next meal. That head is where this works differs, however, as the lack of ears and snout give way to a set of wide eyes and a sharp beak! This predator is still keen on dinner, with those eyes fixed to the ground.
