Tim Alfred was born in Alert Bay in 1967 and moved to Fort Rupert at the age of 18. His earliest teachers were Beau Dick and Wayne Alfred, two prominent artists and teachers in Alert Bay but he would adopt the Fort Rupert style after relocating and the opportunity to work with Calvin and Stan Hunt at the Coppermaker Studio. The studio offered a working space, instruction and access to commissions as well as the opportunity to contribute works to traditional ceremonies. Tim has also been represented by galleries across Vancouver Island and the lower mainland. This mask is a collaborative work with Trevor Hunt, also a respected artist in Fort Rupert and a member of the vibrant Hunt family which has produced many generations of successful artists.

The Sea Bear is a supernatural creature living in the undersea world of komokwa in a kingdom guarded by killer whales. The undersea kingdom is a mirrored world to the world on land and is inhabited by many similar creatures in an equally balanced relationship with birds, animals, the sun, moon and stars etc., as well as the known creatures and distinct supernatural beings of the sea.
