Nunavut (which means “Our Land” in Inuktitut) is Canada’s largest province or territory, and by virtue of its demography is the only one controlled by one of Canada’s First Peoples. The print recalls another famous diptych by Kenojuak, Nunavut Qajanartuk (Our Beautiful Land) of 1992; that print had been commissioned by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada to commemorate the signing of the Agreement-in-Principle that eventually led to the formation of Nunavut (see Odette Leroux et al, Inuit Women Artists (CMC, 1994), pp. 110-111.
