On one hand, set against an impenetrable black ink, laid by Susan Toolooktook, Oonark’s spectral scene in yellow with accented red unfolds with fantastical pliability. On the other, the near-symmetry of the left and right Oonark’s composition are undergirded by standardization and mathematical logic. These opposing forces oscillate interpretations between whimsy and rhythmic rationality, fuelling the sheer visual delight of experiencing the print. Central to the image, an ulu shape radiates from a tattooed face, both the women’s knife and facial tattoos are universal icons of Arctic femininity.Provenance
Collection of John and Joyce Price, Seattle.
