Elder artist Yvoo Samgusak, like Laurent Aksadjuak (Lot 16), played a pivotal role in passing down ceramic skills to younger artists in Rankin Inlet during the 1990s pottery revival. This work likely dates after 1973, when Michael Kusugak's leadership and Charlie Scott's introduction of a slip glaze from local clay transformed the community's pottery techniques. The combination of slip and salt glaze creates a textured surface that softens the blue tones, resulting in the muted, earthy finish that defines this work.
