Perhaps Kinngait’s finest wildlife artist, Kananginak Pootoogook held a lifelong fascination with avian subjects. Once dubbed “the Audubon of the Arctic”, Kananginak produced dozens of graphics and hundred of drawings depicting hawks, loons, seagulls, ducks, and owls in all manner of poses. Whether nesting, swimming, or flying, the permutations and combinations afforded Kananginak an almost limitless repertoire. Not only is this a fabulous image, but we love how the lithographer masterfully elevated Kananginak’s original drawing into a technical marvel.
