Saimaiyu Akesuk’s bold and fearless use of colour has made for one of the more recognizable collections of an artist’s works coming out of Kinngait. When drawing, she uses coloured pencil forcefully and intentionally to create a unique surface texture from the direction of her opposing shading, and hues that frequently get mistaken for ink or markers. It is fitting that Drifting Home features further texture to compliment the hand-drawn bumps and lines, with blind embossed waves that lap around the bird as he floats. The subtle curves of the embossing are a wonderful compliment to harder lines and colour around it.
