Born near Kimmirut (Lake Harbour), she...Although hailing from an artistically talented family which included siblings Iyola and Mikigak Kingwatsiak, Keeleemeeoomee Samualie, and Tye Adla, Anna Kingwatsiak was not prolific. Born near Kimmirut (Lake Harbour), she moved to Kinngait after her husband’s death and was not involved in the first wave of artistic production there. The first of the ten prints based on her drawings were released in 1967 and the bulk in 1970, the year before her death. Interestingly, Birds Frightened by Bears, published posthumously, was originally attributed to the beloved Inuit graphic artist Jamasie Teevee and is so listed in the 1973 catalogue; it was only later that this print was attributed to Anna. The flustered birds and marching bears are arranged in a lively and compact composition that elicits a smile rather than anxiety in the viewer.
