We have been previously treated to Shuvinai Ashoona’s egg-themed works, both in the documentary portrayal (Hatched, 2007 #30), and the surreal (Egg, 2006 #33). Here, we have a delightful portrayal of Shuvinai’s playful take on life in the arctic, more of a hint to her abstract and fantastical imagery. As Leslie Boyd Ryan noted in the catalogue’s forward, “the egg shell becomes the umiak, fragile yet functional, transporting a group of happy-looking people to their next destination - perhaps another world.” 1
