Like many of Josie Pamiutu Papialuk’s stonecuts, Feeding its Young is a charming, monochrome depiction of arctic wildlife. The work shows the essence of its subject, and nothing is superfluous to this image; the minimalist plants are offset by small wavy lines of motion. The mother bird, front and centre to the composition, stands above her young with their next meal. The whole scene is anchored in a field of deep blue ink, the singular hue of which adds to the scratchy lines and texture from the stone, rather than simplify it.
