Splash is an apt title for this image. Kenojuak’s bird certainly makes a dramatic “splash” even if it is likely one of her beloved ravens rather than a seabird. With its distinctive beak and precisely described head, the raven’s body and plumage almost dissolve into abstraction. This certainly gives the impression that the bird is depicted emerging from water. Here the trademark style of Kenojuak’s portrayal of plumage is expressed with a quite remarkable shimmering fluidity.
