A banner year for Kenojuak Ashevak, The Visitation was one of 11 prints to be featured in the 2002 Annual collection by the artist (see Lot 46 of this sale, Splash for another offering), and one of 6 etching and aqautints done in collaboration with Studio PM. True to form, The Visitation features another variation of her beloved birds; the central bird, seated with mouth agape, is surrounded by the spirits of its comrades, themselves a choir of open mouths and warbling necks. Perhaps they are all joined in song, some notes higher than others, as the central bird calls out over the tundra.
