As a respected hunter and camp leader with practically a lifetime of experience living on the land, Luke Anguhadluq’s knowledge of animals was encyclopedic. He was aware of the differences in the coloration and thickness of caribou fur during the seasons; these differences were exploited, for example, in the preparation and design of clothing. April Caribou was published in the 1974 Baker Lake annual catalogue alongside the equally delightful September Caribou. The printmaker Margaret Toodlik sensitively translated Anguhadluq’s beautiful drawing into a richly coloured stonecut and stencil print.
