Although not as well known as his contemporary polar bear bear carvers Nuna Parr (1949-) and Ashevak Tunnillie (1956-2018), Taqialuk (or Tuk) Nuna has been producing striking polar bear compositions since the early 1980’s. Whereas Parr and Ashevak preferred standalone bears, Tuk enjoys creating more complex conjoined sculptures of the mother bear accompanied by one or two of her offspring (the mother distances herself from the father lest he eat the wee ones!). Rather than produce mundane slapdash sculptures, one senses that Tuk Nuna spends a great deal of time and energy creating sculptures which pay homage to his wonderful subjects. We love the playful cub vying for his mothers attention.
