The local geography provides the dark, hard basalt that has defined carvings from the region for decades, and sitting inland at the mouth of the Thelon River allows for a variety of arctic fauna to wander by, particularly caribou. Standing Man with Clasped Hands is a lovely depiction of a figure, gently following the curve and shape of the antler piece it’s carved in. The pose feels natural rather than forced from the material, the figure almost turning slightly in embarrassment as he holds in hands together and looks up at the viewer.
Provenance
Collection of Vivian Julien, a schoolteacher who worked in the Canadian Arctic from the late 1950s until the mid 1970s;
by descent to a Private Collection, Ontario.
