As one of the four prints by Kenojuak Ashevak in the 2006 Annual Print Collection, Spotted Loon can immediately be noted for following a theme that year (see Tuulliq Taanisiqtuq (Dancing Loon), Lot 26 this sale, and Golden Goose, 2006 #12). Beyond this, it is an incredibly vibrant and striking rendition of Kenojuak’s work; while her more monotone black and white works could have their own punch from contrasts, this work is absolutely enlivened by the deep red and series of blue and green hues against the black, hinting to the iridescent nature of a loon’s feathers. Bright white spots pop against all of these colours, lining the body and wings in an array of circles. One can easily imagine this work being a scene from the legend of how the Loon received their beautiful coat, painted by Raven, and proudly shown off.
