Beyond its utilitarian purposes, the ulu is an object of cultural significance to the Inuit. Inuit utilitarian objects have a rich history of ornamentation, and it is therefore fitting that many contemporary artists employ the images of utilitarian objects in their work. This work, by an unknown hand, is an interesting counterpoint to early Inuit ivories where contrasting stone (or baleen, or wax) images were set into an ivory base. Here we are presented with a life-sized stone and caribou ulu with ivory relief decoration. This sculpture affirms the connection between arctic animals and the Inuit way of lifeProvenance
Acquired by the current private collection in Ontario during her visit to the region, where she provided on-site training for community airport operators.
