While the practice of making items known as ‘pika-uu’ in Nuu-chah-nulth, which means ‘trinket basket,’ is one of the skills that transferred more readily into the trading economy, the smaller results of this practice have the ability to bring more delight than their diminutive size can hold. This trio of miniature works, two lidded baskets and a rain hat have all the hallmarks of the skilled and patient hand that likely also made other work of a slightly more practical size. These works still showcase scene work like whale hunting, and repeat patterns themed in avian and marine mammal, on a scale that demands the rightful respect for the execution. Regardless of either being made as a model of larger works that could be commissioned, or just as a miniature variation to provide more economical purchase opportunities, these works would be a charming addition to any collection.
