These two works by celebrated artist Joe David, Natural and Supernatural, depict a powerful interplay between nature and legend. In Natural, an eagle is depicted mid-hunt, wings raised as it descends upon a fish. The vertical composition enhances the sense of speed and power as the raptor strikes its prey. In Supernatural, Joe cleverly reimagines the traditionally horizontal sisiutl, or sea serpent, adapting it to fit the vertical format. Given that Natural and Supernatural are complementary in both colour and composition, it seems the artist intended to create a visual and conceptual dialogue between the natural and the supernatural realms.
