He learned to carve by observing his grandfather, and also experimented with graphic art by illustrating his grandfather’s stories for the archives at the Uqqurmiut Centre, and making drawings to be used as templates by the printmakers and weavers in Panniqtuuq. He is now one of the best known artists in Panniqtuuq, with a prolific output. Here we are treated to a lively figure by Ishulutaq, a drum dancer mid-beat on the drum and song. While solid in stance and presence, this figure has a sense of movement and energy; there is a subtle flare of the coat, as if catching the wind as they move, and their arms are poised upward, holding the drum and beater high. With a slight lean to one side, almost an understated signature of Ishuliutaq’s carvings, one can easily imagine this Drum Dancer moving despite the static stone.
