This contemporary Yup’ik basket and perfectly fitting lid dating to 1980’s is constructed from rye grass in a bundle-coiled method. Longer strips of pale grass are imbricated over multiple coils near the rim of the basket giving the illusion of melting ice or dripping seal oil. This unique design adds a creative and playful element to this finely sewn basket. Baskets of this style are known as “mingqaaq” and were commonly made for the tourist trade.
