Woven...A complex cedar and raffia rain hat made by Makah artist June Parker. This hat is an exceptionally fine example of June’s work, which is rarely available for sale. Woven in a plain twining pattern with red and black designs applied with an overlay technique and rows of natural and dyed cedar bark woven in a plaiting pattern. The hat has a wonderful symmetry and shape, with a tight even weave.
June learned basketry weaving from her grandmother and drew stylistic inspiration from her aunt, renowned Lummi artist Frances James. This hat incorporates a unique blend of both Lummi and Makah styles. The black and red designs on the crown of the hat represent the Makah Nation Flag, depicting a thunderbird holding a whale with lightning serpents on either side. The designs on the brim represent gray or humpback whales. The headband of the hat is woven in a diagonal plaiting with thick strips of cedar. A hide strap is attached to the headband to keep the hat secure when worn.
