A lidded Unangax̂ (Aleut) basket dating to the 1930s. The basket has been beautifully restored and is intricately woven with wild rye grass and embroidered with pink and green silk thread. Unangax̂ baskets are considered some of the finest in the world due to the fineness of the weave. This basket is woven using a tight plain twining method with designs embroidered with silk thread. The pink and green embroidered flowers likely represent both Russian Orthodox crosses and dwarf fireweed, a small four petaled flower that grows wild throughout the Aleutian Islands.
