Amos is noted as one of the greatest Nuu-chah-nulth basketry makers of her generation,...A rare offering of a lidded “trinket” or “fancy” basket by Nuu-chah-nulth weaver Martha Amos (Smith). Amos is noted as one of the greatest Nuu-chah-nulth basketry makers of her generation, making baskets for sale during the 1950’s and 1960’s. Her work has been featured at the Inuit Gallery of Vancouver.
This basket has a unique triangular shape and is woven from natural and dyed grasses in a wrapped twining method. Each side of the basket has a different pictorial motif. One side has two sea birds in flight woven from a purple/brown dyed grass, while another side depicts a whaling scene with two fishermen in red, green and purple/brown dyed grass, and the third side depicts a whale in purple/blue dyed grass. Near the base of the basket and the lid top and rim are woven with stripes of purple/brown and yellow dyed grass. The lid fits snugly over a recessed band of plated cedar.
