However, she was quite prolific; almost one thousand drawings by her are held in the Cape Dorset Archive at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the great majority depicting birds and a variety of fanciful creatures. Relatively few are hunting scenes, and fewer than ten depict bear hunts (the image resembles the top tier of a 1962 engraving by her husband!). Memories of the Hunt has all the appealing naïveté of Lizzie’s more typical animal imagery, and is likely very faithful to her original drawing, which would have had the bear filled in with graphite pencil strokes and the hunter drawn to delineate the cut of his clothing. The depiction of the wounded bear is both charming and poignant.
Lizzie was born near Salluit (Sugluk), Nunavik; her husband Saggiak (1897-1980) came from from neighbouring Kangiqsujuaq (Wakeham Bay). Their family crossed Hudson Strait and settled at Igalaalik Camp at Andrew Gordon Bay northeast of Kinngait. Saggiak became a well-respected stone carver and occasionally experimented with graphic art in the very early years of printmaking. Their son Kumakuluk became a sculptor of some repute as well.
