Like many women in the community, she adapted her sewing skills to making “wall hangings” in the early 1970s. One of her textile works was included (and illustrated) in the landmark exhibition and catalogue Crafts from Arctic Canada in 1974. From the examples we have seen it is clear to us that this artist preferred the embroidery rather than the appliqué technique. Seven Purple Birds is a truly charming example of her work at its most free-form. The zany stitchery is almost jazz-like in its abandon; the birds look as if they might wander off the background at any moment; the background stitches look like their meandering tracks!
Provenance
Collection of Sally Qimmiu’naaq Webster, Ottawa.
Sally and her husband David Webster moved back to Baker Lake from Ottawa for five years (1997-2002), during which time she owned and operated Baker Lake Fine Arts.
