His art frequently explores themes of hybrid animals and shamanic practices, motifs that find vivid expression in this metal sculpture.
This work was created in collaboration with Canadian artist Joe Fafard (1942-2019), a pioneer in laser-cut metal techniques during the 1980s and 90s, this work transforms Tookoome’s visual language into a new, dimensional form. The metal cut-outs lend his imagery an intriguing interplay of depth and lightness, as if the figures are both emerging from and dissolving into their surroundings. While the wolf’s splayed legs serve a functional purpose, anchoring the sculpture, the overall flatness of the composition preserves Tookoome’s signature aesthetic—a surface alive with peering, enigmatic forms.
