This charming fellow by Joe carries himself with a sense of enormous pride. The animal sits upright, its front flippers firmly planted and turned toward the viewer, as if it has chosen its position and intends to hold it while holding court. His large almond shaped eyes, so characteristic of Joe’s work, look slightly upward with a curious, almost playful expression. They are set beneath a broad forehead and held in balance by the prominent snout and tusks, which push forward into space and give the head its weight. The work brims with character, and it shows Joe’s particular gift for making an animal feel both familiar and wholly its own.
