The stone used by carvers from Qamani’tuaq is famously hard and unyielding. As a result, most sculptors have developed a rather minimalist style which favours form over detail. Pukingrnak stands as a notable exception to the rule, and this remarkable gem exemplifies why. Note the tremendous attention to detail in the beautifully braided hair as well as the exceptional relief carving on the amautik. More amazing still, perhaps, is the effort that the artist invested in the underside of the sculpture, delineating the woman’s legs, a detail that almost nobody might notice yet the artist deemed important. Superb!
