Most of his pieces are signed Gitsgah, reflecting the name used for much of his carving career. A prolific artist since the 1960s, Gitkinjuaas trained at the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts (now Emily Carr University) under master carver Henry Hunt. He remains an active carver and a vital member of his Haida community.
This Model Swimming Beaver Form Bowl exemplifies the artist's refined craftsmanship during a nascent stage of his career. The elegant composition features a well formed, sinuous rim that evokes the rushing of water, while the intricately carved beaver head emerges effortlessly from the bowl’s form. The polished surface contrasts with the deftly detailed incisions, including the beaver’s legs stretching back along the edge to suggest gliding motion and the upturned tail at the rear, adorned with a human face.
