As noted in Lot 10, the people of Kugaaruk (Pelly Bay) draw both sustenance and inspiration from the bay’s abundant marine life. This connection has profoundly shaped Kugaaruk’s artistic traditions, with carvers gaining renown for their intricate ivory works and small-scale scenes. These compact pieces, crafted with practicality in mind for southern markets, have become a defining feature of the community’s artistic legacy.

In this work, three birds, likely geese, alight on the ground. Their wings, captured mid-motion, add a sense of gentle movement, while the minimalistic arrangement emphasizes harmony, balance, and the grace of their forms.
