Aoudla Pee began carving in the very early 1950s and was already being exhibited during that period. He carved numerous spirit pieces in the early 1960s and, unlike his Cape Dorset sculptor peers, continued carving similarly styled works until at least 1980. Were it not for the 1970s stone type, Spirit Beings might easily have been attributed to the early 1960s. It has the spirit and grace, and the delightfully ambiguous subject matter, of one of those “old time” carvings. Beautifully proportioned and sensitively carved, this low-slung spirit composition is not at all frightening or unsettling. Lovely.
