This...Steve Collison was from a prominent family of Haida artists. Collison’s style of carving was defined by its clean lines and his poles were often topped by prominent finials. This pole features, from top: a raven, frog, killer whale, and a grizzly bear with frogs emerging from its eyes. The bear is holding an inverted woman. The pole is mounted on a chamfered argillite base. This pole is a fine example of 1970s Haida art with finely incised formlines that accentuate the sculpture of the wings of the raven and flukes and pectoral fins of the killer whale. The mixture of figures and the specificity of the imagery may indicate that this pole is alluding to a specific Haida story.
