Andy Mamgark was somewhat of an outlier in the Arviat community style. He began carving in 1959 while working at the Rankin Inlet nickel mine. His very first work was a carving of a polar bear. Although Mamgark sometimes carved quite lovely and charming human figures, the polar bear became his favourite subject. As he studied bears more and received many special requests, he eventually carved polar bears almost exclusively, in his trademark style that combined realism and lyrical stylization. Tragically, Mamgark died in a carving accident in 1997.
