Although best known for their stone sculptures, the artists of Qamani’tuaq were encouraged to produce “arts and crafts” using caribou antlers (and even hooves!) in the early 1960s. While Luke...Although best known for their stone sculptures, the artists of Qamani’tuaq were encouraged to produce “arts and crafts” using caribou antlers (and even hooves!) in the early 1960s. While Luke Iksiktaaryuk and his brother Peter Assivaaryuk decided to work almost exclusively in this organic carving material, most of their contemporaries returned to carving the hard local stone. Several artists produced magnificently elongated and elegant carvings of birds. Alas, while several of these bird figures were signed in pencil, the present example remains unattributed despite its noble stature.Provenance
